Catherine's artwork merges contemporary concepts with elements of traditional Dene culture in order to address the complexities of memory, history and cultural identity. Combining beadwork, porcupine quills, fur and other natural elements with Dene syllabics and images, she examines marginalization and resilience from her perspective as a woman of Aboriginal and European ancestry. Accounts of residential school survivors’ experiences—including those of her own family—have inspired a project entitled Our Mother(s) Tongue which examines encounters through the exploration of loss, cultural exchange and survival.
Catherine graduated with a BFA in Studio Art from University of Saskatchewan in 2007. She has received numerous awards including a grant from Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. Exhibitions include group and solo shows in Western Canada, Toronto and Taiwan.
