Hartman has received international acclaim for his large-scale brightly-coloured paintings, aerial views of cities and the landscape of Georgian Bay, Newfoundland and the BC Interior painted with thick, juicy paint. Hartman first sketched the western shores of Conception Bay in 1996. In 2016 he returned, travelling up and down the coast working on site in his accordion sketchbooks. These watercolour studies along with photographs taken from a small, camera-equipped drone were later used as the landscape backgrounds for portraits of Newfoundland’s most noted authors, each presented in a place important to them, a place where they belonged.
Hartman has been painting the intimate and intertwined relationship between people and place since the 1990s. He is an impressively prolific artist and has exhibited extensively in Canada with solo exhibitions in every major city from Victoria to St. John’s, and internationally in New Orleans, San Francisco, New York, London and Copenhagen. His paintings can be found in possibly every public gallery collection in Canada.
