BORN St. Catherine’s, NL   LIVES St. John’s, NL

Ned Pratt’s early career was divided between his own art and commercial and newspaper photography. For over a decade he has focused on his own practice, using elements of the Newfoundland landscape and mundane man-made structures within it.  Reviewers of the 2012 Oh Canada exhibition at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art referred to his works as “quiet gems” with “expressive wallop”.  In large photographs at the Wellness Centre, Bonavista, Pratt turns light, space, textures and objects such as a utility pole or the steel structure of a new ferry into formally constructed, increasingly abstract images, an alternative Newfoundland landscape. In a project with writer and curator Gloria Hickey, Pratt made portraits of several St. John’s area residents who have chosen to turn their skin into a canvas— on view at Port Rexton Brewing Co. They will elicit a range of responses and questions about tattoo culture, once marginal, now mainstream.

Pratt’s solo show during Toronto’s 2016 Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival was a notable festival hit. Highlights of his exhibition record include inclusion in Oh Canada, MMOCA, North Adams, Mass., and Changing Tides: Contemporary Art of Newfoundland and Labrador, McMichael Canadian Art Collection. His works are in many private, corporate and public collections.
