Compositrice, performeuse et musicienne, Gayle Young présente les relations sonores comme des phénomènes naturels. De ses installations sonores expérimentales à la composition et à l’interprétation d’une musique microtonale sur des instruments acoustiques de sa conception, l’approche de Gayle Young, pointue, ouverte, parfois improvisée, comprend des compositions d’instruments orchestraux et électroniques ainsi que des paysages sonores préenregistrés.

À l’aide d’enregistrements sous-marins captés le long du littoral de la péninsule de Bonavista et de l’île Fogo, l’artiste a créé une installation sonore qui marie les rythmes plus vifs de l’eau qui monte, descend et tourbillonne avec les ondulations plus lentes de l’océan Atlantique. Un son venu d’un autre monde est diffusé par deux haut-parleurs placés sur le grand plancher de bois du centre. Les échos sous-marins résonnent dans notre diaphragme et se fondent dans une cadence de sons inexplorés et recontextualisés d’un univers intérieur.

Partie d’un trio d’œuvres, CrossWaves est la composante océanique d’une installation collaborative de terre, de mer et de ciel. Duntara Harbour de Scott Walden recrée le terrain avec une série de 150 photos disposées sur le sol selon le même arc, les mêmes lignes droites et sentiers sinueux du havre à deux pas de là. La Maritime Forest de Sara Angelucci met en scène le chant matinal d’oiseaux sifflets-oiseaux. Jouées en alternance avec CrossWaves, ces sonorités célestes forment un contraste marqué avec les clameurs de baryton venues des profondeurs de la mer. Cette expérience sensorielle, totalement artificielle, est un montage de sons et d’images qui invite l’extérieur à l’intérieur, transformant ainsi le centre communautaire en un espace écologique magique. Gayle Young, composer, performer and music artist, presents sound relationships as if they were natural phenomena. From experimental sound installations to composing and performing microtonal music on acoustic instruments of her own design, Young’s practice is focused and open ended, at times improvisational, with sound compositions from orchestral and electronic instruments as well as pre-recorded soundscapes.

Using underwater recordings taken along the shorelines of the Bonavista Peninsula and Fogo Island, Young creates a sound installation that combines the faster rhythms of water rising and falling and rocks swirling around, with the slower underlying undulations of the North Atlantic. An otherworldly sound is emitted from two speaker systems arranged in the large wooden-floored hall. Underwater ocean sounds resonate in our diaphragm, gradually simmering into a cadence of unexplored sound, re-contextualized in an indoor setting.

Part of a trio of works, CrossWaves is the oceanic component in a collaborative installation of land, sea and sky. Duntara Harbour by Scott Walden recreates the ground with a series of 150 photographs arranged on the floor following the same arc, straight lines and meandering path of the harbour a stone’s throw away. Sara Angelucci’s Maritime Forest is a morning chorus of birdsongs made using toy bird whistles. Playing in rotation with Young’s CrossWaves, the celestial audio work is in sharp contrast to the baritone sounds from the depths of the sea. This sensory experience is entirely artificial, a construction in sound and images that brings the outdoors indoors, transforming the community hall into a magical ecological site. CB
