Peter von Tiesenhausen a passé presque toute sa vie dans la forêt boréale du Nord-Ouest canadien. Son art est souvent l’expression des lieux qu’il fréquente et des trouvailles qu’il y fait. Il a commencé par sculpter des bateaux de glace au début des années 1990 sur les plans d’eau environnants. Les variations de température dues au réchauffement climatique ont mis fin à ce projet. Son film Island a été tourné en Islande, où la nature déborde d’une vie qui évoque Gaia, la déesse de la Terre. Un personnage solitaire, campé face à une mer déchaînée, commence à sculpter un bloc de glace. La scène est filmée au ralenti pour retarder métaphoriquement le processus. Il brandit une hache, à la fois outil et paratonnerre, symbole de création et de destruction. Un bateau de glace sculpté émerge, vaisseau qui va relier Island au reste du monde. Cette mise en scène de l’homme face à la nature explore l’acharnement de l’humain à survivre dans un monde secoué par des bouleversements.

Death’s Door est une installation connexe présentée de l’autre côté de la pièce. Elle comprend un panneau solaire, un lecteur vidéo, des boîtes de métal et de bois qui suggèrent la fonte de la calotte glaciaire. Un dispositif tourne dans un grincement intrusif à l’intérieur d’une bouteille de verre disposée dans une boîte de métal pour recréer le bruit de la glace qui s’effondre. Un lecteur vidéo solaire magnifie toute la scène. Une caisse de bois récupérée, isolée de mousse, tient lieu d’écrin à un morceau d’iceberg qui fond lentement. Death’s Door est une contribution significative à l’environnement que Peter von Tiesenhausen a échafaudé. L’installation nous avertit que la fonte rapide déclenchera des événements critiques aux conséquences catastrophiques dans le monde entier. CB

Peter von Tiesenhausen has lived and worked in the boreal forest of northwestern Canada for most of his life. His art is often an expression of where he finds himself and a utilization of what is at hand. Von Tiesenhausen first started making boats of ice in the early 1990s on bodies of water surrounding his studio and home. The temperature-sensitive projects are no longer possible due to the wildly fluctuating climate. Island was filmed in Iceland, where the elements are throbbing with life, evoking the earth goddess Gaia. A solitary figure in the face of an angry sea and vast glacial landscape selects an ice boulder and begins to carve. His movements are filmed in slow motion, metaphorically delaying the progress. He wields an axe, an iron implement used for technical advancement and as a thunderbolt to guard against lightning—symbol of both creation and destruction. A sculpted boat of ice emerges, a means of travel connecting Island to the global world. This man-versus-nature film speaks to the human compulsion to survive in the face of overwhelming odds.

Death’s Door is an accompanying installation at the other end of the room. It comprises a solar panel, a video player, metal and wooden boxes that together create a visualization of the polar ice cap melting. A rotating device in a glass bottle recreates the falling ice with a crumbling sound as it grinds inside the metal box, urging us to listen. A solar powered video enlarges the action. A salvaged wooden box is insulated with moss, cradling a piece of slowly melting iceberg. Death’s Door is a meaningful addition to the environment von Tiesenhausen has assembled. It warns us that increasingly rapid melting will trigger tipping points with catastrophic consequences around the globe. CB
