Glenn Gear
Bonavista Biennale is working with Glenn Gear to develop and present a new installation with small and large-scale graphics, embedded projections, sound and light. Gear’s installation on the Bonavista Peninsula will be linked through a “portal” to his concurrent exhibition, Sinew and Stars, at The Rooms in St. John’s (on view June 30, 2023 – January 21, 2024).
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Glenn Gear is a filmmaker and multi-disciplinary artist originally from Newfoundland, and currently based in Montreal, Quebec. Much of his work explores alternative forms of storytelling through research-based creation and personal/tactile knowledge rooted in his Inuit heritage connected to Nunatsiavut. Primarily focused on animation and moving images, he also uses archives, photographs, drawings, traditional crafts, and objects in his practice. Gear’s work delves into the relationships between people, animals, and land, rethinking the spaces in which history, hope and Inuit knowledge may thrive. Gear was the Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership 2020-2021 Artist-in-Residence, jointly held between Concordia University and the University of Winnipeg. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre, Edmonton, and Articule, Montreal, and in 2021 he was recognized on the Sobey Art Award longlist.
