Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the 2025 artists?

The artists featured in the 2025 Biennale will be announced in the fall of 2024. Please refer to the Archive menu tab for artist lists from past Biennales.

How are the artists chosen?

The Bonavista Biennale is a curated exhibition that strives to present a diversity of artists and art forms. A new curatorial team is brought together for each Biennale.

Once the Curators establish a theme, they undertake a research process to identify artists, works and sites for the Biennale. The Curators consult archives and catalogues, visit artist studios and exhibitions, and evaluate locations around the Bonavista Peninsula. Their selections emerge out of consideration of the theme, the variety of artists’ practices and media, experience and perspectives, and potential of specific indoor and outdoor spaces for installation of artists’ works.

How much is the entrance fee?

The entire Biennale is free and open to all. This includes all indoor and outdoor exhibition sites, events, performances and talks. Some events, such as workshops, may have a limited capacity and require advance registration.

Is photography permitted?

Yes! Unless you see signage indicating otherwise, all Biennale installations and activities can be photographed. If you’re posting on social media, please include our hashtag #bonavistabiennale

During what hours are Biennale sites open?

Indoor sites are typically open seven days a week from 11am – 5pm. While outdoor sites can be accessed seven days a week, 24 hours a day, please take care when navigating sites outside of daylight hours and be mindful of inclement weather.

Where can I find parking? How far will I need to walk?

Parking lots, where available, are shown on our Peninsula site map. In other locations, off-road parking is normally acceptable. Please be courteous of the communities you’re visiting and treat private property as if it were your own.

Access to sites and walking distances vary. Not every Biennale site is accessible to wheelchair users or those using other mobility assistive tools. Some installations can be easily enjoyed from a distance, with no walking required.

We welcome your questions about accessibility and a discussion on how we can best support your own tour of Biennale sites. Feel free to contact Executive Director Sue Balint (sue@bonavistabiennale.com) with your specific questions or concerns.

I’m an artist. How can I share my work with the Biennale team?

We’re always happy to hear from artists. If you’d like to share your work with the Biennale team, please send a note and portfolio / selection of recent works to admin@bonavistabiennale.com.

Are artists paid for their participation in the Biennale?

Yes. We pay artists professional fees based on a scale determined by CARFAC (Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des artistes canadinens). We also offer travel stipends and additional fees for activities like talks and workshops.

I am a teacher. How can I engage my students in the Biennale?

We love to engage with learners of all ages.  Please contact us via admin@bonavistabiennale.com and we will be in touch to talk about possibilities.

Do I need to book my visit to the Biennale in advance?

The Biennale is a free, ticket-less event. Some events, such as workshops, may have a limited capacity and require advance registration.

To get the most out of your tour of Biennale sites, it’s best to plan the logistics of your visit ahead of time. Download a Peninsula site map, consult our suggested itineraries, and plan your route. We recommend planning at least two days to experience all the sites along the 165 km route. It’s also very important to book accommodations and rental cars well in advance.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Tourism “Welcome Desk” is an incredibly helpful resource. Visit them online or give them a call at 1.800.563.6353.

How can I support the Biennale?

Individuals can support the Biennale through donations, details can be found on the Donate page. You can also help by spreading the word about the Biennale and encouraging others to attend! Biennale visitors can also support our site and event partners by visiting and participating in their regular exhibitions, tours, and business.
