SK Maston
SK Maston’s work explores alternative forms of awareness found in the vantage point of animals such as insects, single-celled organisms, domestic horses, birds and rodents. Through ceramics, paintings, and textile installations, Maston works to render parallel lifeworlds that are indicative of a distant ancestor’s sense of physicality or distinct rhythm of nature.
For the Biennale, Maston is developing a new site-specific installation for the slate mine in Keels. Currently inactive, the mine site is a unique landscape of dramatic cliff sides, sheer rock faces, and evidence of both ancient and recent geological change. Maston visited the Bonavista Peninsula in June to learn about the area’s fossil deposits and gather both organic and industrial materials to inform the development of the work.
