Wanda Koop est profondément inspirée par l’eau. Son studio se trouve à Winnipeg, bassin versant de l’Amérique du Nord et centre géographique de l’eau. Ses peintures récentes SEEWAY FLOE présentent l’eau, source de vie, comme une influence apaisante en ces temps perturbés. Le titre fait référence à la peinture fluide appliquée dans les lavis et à son imagerie d’intempéries qui se déversent sur des plans d’eau. Les peintures sont exposées dans une grande salle perchée sur une colline qui surplombe un vaste panorama de criques, de bras de mer et de ports, à l’image des œuvres de Wanda Koop. Ces peintures ne concurrencent pas la nature : elles en font partie.

La démarche de Wanda Koop explore l’industrialisation et la technologie en interface avec la nature. Peint en couches subtiles de couleurs harmonieuses, SEEWAY FLOE offre un espace pour contempler nos alentours. Tours minuscules, cheminées d’usines et lumières pointent à l’horizon comme des repères incontournables du progrès (ou de son mythe). Ces formes interrompent l’immensité du paysage pour dépeindre son altération au fil du temps.

Cette série de cinq tableaux a été créée pour la Biennale Bonavista. Elle revisite une œuvre antérieure, SEEWAY, inspirée d’un voyage sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent. En 2010, Wanda Koop a navigué avec la cinéaste Katherine Knight sur le cargo Birchglen, de Québec jusqu’au golfe du Saint-Laurent. Le voyage fait partie intégrante du film documentaire Koop. Les études réalisées à bord sont devenues la base de son travail. Koop, réalisé par Katherine Knight, a été projeté avec l’exposition de peintures. CB

Wanda Koop is deeply invested in water. Her studio is in Winnipeg, watershed of North America and geographic centre of water. Her recent paintings SEEWAY FLOE present water, the element of life, as a calming influence for challenging times. The title refers to the fluid paint applied in washes, and her imagery of atmospheric conditions precipitating into bodies of water. The paintings are exhibited in a large room high upon a hill that towers over an expansive ocean view of coves, inlets and harbours, unfolding below like Koop’s paintings themselves. These paintings don’t compete with nature; they are part of it.

Koop’s practice explores industrialization and technology as it interfaces with the natural world. Painted in subtle layers of harmonious colour, SEEWAY FLOE offers a space to contemplate the terrain. Tiny towers, smokestacks and lights appear in the distance as inescapable markers of progress (or its myth). These forms interrupt the vastness of the landscape to depict its alteration over time.

This suite of five paintings was created specifically for the Bonavista Biennale. It revisits an earlier body of work, SEEWAY, that was inspired by a journey down the St. Lawrence River. In 2010, Koop traveled with filmmaker Katherine Knight aboard the ocean freighter Birchglen, from Quebec City to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The voyage became an integral part of the documentary film Koop. The observational studies she made while on the ship became the basis for her work. Koop, directed by Katherine Knight, was screened in tandem with the exhibition of paintings. CB
