Big Art in Small Places: Contemporary Art Outside of the City

Sunday, August 17, 3:00 – 4:00 pm
The Garrick Theatre, Bonavista

Speakers: Ethan Murphy, Inuuteq Storch, Michael Massie, Toby Rabinowitz
Moderator: Alysa Procida

When we think of contemporary artists participating in the international art world, we might assume they prefer to live in major urban centres like Toronto, London or New York, where access to exhibition venues, opportunities, and audiences abound. But big cities can also be isolating and overwhelming, where competition outstrips collaboration and inspiration may be hard to find. Some artists prefer to work in rural and remote locations, where access may be more challenging but creativity flourishes. The artists on this panel discuss the challenges and benefits of working from home, whether that is on an island, out on the land, in a small community or other remote location.
