Join us for a talk by Dr. Duncan McIlroy: “Form, Function & Fossils from Discovery: An Artistic Approach to Making Silent Stones Speak.”

Dr. McIlroy shared his knowledge of the Bonavista Peninsula’s unique fossil formations with Biennale artist SK Maston, informing her installation at the Keels Slate Mine.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Duncan McIlroy is a University Research Professor at Memorial University who studies the early complex fossils known as the Ediacara Biota mainly from rocks from Newfoundland and the UK. He graduated from the University of Oxford and has been a professor at Memorial since 2004. Duncan is deeply involved in the Discovery Global Geopark for whom he serves as an advisor. His passions include palaeontology, geoconservation, geoeducation and he has been working with tourism operators in Discovery to unlock some of the tourism potential of the Geopark.
